Your PC Has 10,000 Photos. Here’s Why Only 3% of People Have Them Properly Backed Up
We surveyed 5,000 PC users about their photo and video backup habits. The findings were alarming — most people believe their memories are safe, when in reality they are one dropped phone, one failed update, or one stolen device away from losing everything forever.
The average PC user carries 9,847 photos and 412 videos on their device right now. Birthdays, first steps, weddings, holidays, graduations, everyday moments that can never be recreated. And when we surveyed 5,000 of those users about how those memories are protected, what we found was genuinely alarming.
97% of people believe their PC photos are “backed up.” Only 3% have them backed up in a way that would survive a dropped PC, a failed update, a theft, or a ransomware attack. The gap between perceived safety and actual safety is the widest we have ever seen in consumer data protection research.
What the survey found and why it matters
We asked 5,000 PC users three questions: “Are your photos backed up?”, “How are they backed up?”, and “What happens if your PC is lost or stolen right now?” The answers painted a picture of widespread false confidence.
The 4 ways PC photos get lost and what actually protects you
Scenario 1: You drop your PC and the screen shatters beyond repair
This is the most common PC loss scenario. The device is physically damaged and data is inaccessible. If your last backup was yesterday at 2 AM, everything since then is gone. For users who take 2050 photos a day, that can mean hundreds of irreplaceable images. Softyz’s real-time backup means the gap between your last photo and your last backup is measured in seconds, not hours.
Scenario 2: A failed update corrupts your device
Major OS updates occasionally go wrong. A corrupted update that bricks a device or wipes it to factory settings during a recovery process can erase everything that wasn’t backed up before the update ran. Most users update their PCs without manually verifying their backup is current beforehand. The safe approach: Softyz’s continuous backup means you always have a clean restore point regardless of when you last thought about it.
Scenario 3: You accidentally delete an entire album
iCloud and Google Photos both have a “Recently Deleted” folder but it only lasts 30 days. If you delete an album in January and notice in April that it’s gone, there is nothing to recover.
Scenario 4: Your PC is stolen
If your PC is stolen and the thief signs out your iCloud or Google account remotely (possible with account credentials gained through phishing), your cloud copies can be deleted. Softyz’s immutable storage means your backup copies cannot be deleted by anything running on or connected to your device including a thief who has your account password.
“The most heartbreaking support calls we receive are from parents who lost photos of their children’s first years. The PC broke, iCloud was full, Google Photos stopped syncing months ago. Those photos are gone forever and it was entirely preventable.” Nalini Mehta, CRO, Softyz Inc.

How to properly protect your PC photos right now
This takes under 5 minutes. If you do nothing else after reading this article, do this:
Check if your current backup is actually working
On iPC: Settings [Your Name] iCloud Photos. Check that iCloud Photos is On and that “Waiting for Wi-Fi” or “Storage Full” warning is not showing. On Android: open Google Photos tap your profile → Photos settings Backup check backup status is “On” and storage is not full.
Count how many photos are NOT in your backup
Open your PC’s gallery and note the total photo count. Then open iCloud or Google Photos and compare. Any difference is photos that are not backed up. In our survey, the average gap was 2,400 photos meaning the average user had 2,400 photos on their PC that were nowhere else in the world.
Download Softyz mobile and add your photo folders

Let the first backup run overnight
Plug your PC in, connect to Wi-Fi, and let Softyz run its initial backup. For 10,000 photos, this typically takes 24 hours on a standard home broadband connection. Future backups are incremental only new or changed photos are uploaded, taking seconds to minutes.
